Getting papers signed and getting things squared away can be a hassle. For those that need to have papers made official, a notary public can help. What is a notary public and what do they do? Keep reading to find out.

What Does a Notary Public Do?

A notary public is a certified professional that works to help screen the people that are signing important documents and helps to prevent fraud. There are many types of documents that require that you either have the signature witnessed or that need a notary public to offer their seal.

These professionals work to help make sure that someone that is signing is not being forced to sign, that they are in good mental health and know what is going on, and they also make sure that the people who are signing are who they say they are. They can also put the person that is signing under oath, they can check the validity of the information and they work to make sure that the documents are legal.

There are tons of documents that might require a notary public. The first is property deeds. You might need a notary for car titles, sales bills, wills and power of attorney, and more. They are often presiding over documents that are life-changing and that are very important and need to be totally bulletproof.

A notary public will get a certification and go through a certificate course to get their particular number. This number relates to them and to them only. The number is logged and they are given a seal that they use when they put on the documents that they witness so that the judge or anyone else can refer back to that number and figure out what notary worked on that particular document.

Should I Hire a Notary Public?

Not all people are going to need a notary public. Not all documents are going to need a notary public. It is always a good idea to think about what it is that you are signing and what it is that you are wanting to do with that document after it is signed. Are you signing something that might need to be held up in a court of law? Are you buying something that the seller might come back and try to take? Do you trust the person that is signing with you? Do you know them well? These are all things that you need to take into account.

If you are ever unsure if you need a notary public or not, it is always better to have that seal than to not have it. A notary public often charges a small fee for their services as they are required to pay each year to keep their number current. You can find a ton of notary public options if you take the time to see who is around. Depending on where you are, you may be able to find a notary public that works where you are actually signing, making it easy so that you do not have to go to a totally new area.
